Nappy Competition WINNER ANNOUNCED! Giveaway Nappy was donated by Michelle of Sustainable Hemp Products.
The simple environmental initiative is based on the collective impact of each family doing ONE thing; having a lovely time lookng around My Green Nappy, discovering all the lovely WAHM’s out there who can help you with your cloth nappy needs, introducing you to new ideas or recapping old information in a new way - all to help you find the perfect ‘green nappy’ for your baby to wear.
That simple committment means one less disposable each time it is worn by your baby. Your baby then becomes an ambassador for ‘nappy change’, helping spread the ‘modern cloth’ nappy love and shrinking the eco footprint of baby after baby – just that little bit!
Our mission is to strive towards every baby having at least one ‘green’ nappy to wear, keeping a throwaway disposable out of the environment each time it is worn.
With over 300 thousand babies born down under each year, that one green nappy will make a difference!
Our Comment Question is:
Do YOU have a green nappy? (Has My Green Nappy inspired you to get your first one?)
Read through the responses left by other mums to get a feel for how they are getting started, the brands and types they started with.

My baby is not born yet but i will be using Real Nappies. Cant Wait to give them a go.
One? I have 70 so far!
I think the concept of having at least one green nappy for every baby is a great idea. It definitely gives people a different way at looking at it. I think it lets those who use disposals know that even using some cloth helps.
I got given some ‘Baby Weenees’ from a friend and have been using them for the past month. I liked them but wanted to try another brand (especially for night) so bought a ‘monkey doodlez’ and really like it. I was surprise to hear about MCN as most of my friends use disposables. I have told my mothers group about this great initiative and they are playing to learn more and hopefully win a nappy to try. If only something could be put into the Bounty Bag you get given in hospital to tell new mum’s about MCN. I think alot, like me, didn’t even know they existed and only think of cloth as the old terry flats.
I think the ‘Do YOU have one’ campaign is WONDERFUL. All it takes is for people to buy and try one. Then before you know it, they have a stash because they are so cute, wonderful, easy to use, environmental etc etc etc…. AND ADDICTIVE!!!!
The problem is getting people to take the leap into the unknown and buy the first one. Hopefully this campaign will drive them to do so… well done!!
Our first baby is due late September & I decided from the outset that I would use cloth nappies, but have only learnt about MCNs in the past 4 months!
It amazes me how negative people are when you say you are going to use cloth and how many misconceptions there are about using cloth nappies. To me there is very little to decide when apart from the convenience of disposables (I don’t feel I can use a product damaging to the environment & possibly my bub + spend so much more just becauase i am too lazy to wash/deal with dirty nappies) cloth is so much better!
I have already purchased 6 Monk’n’Bear nappies though intend to have a full set of MCNs prior to bub being born. Finding your website has been very timely as it is taking a lot of the leg work out of deciding what else to add to my stash.
Thank you!
I think this is a great cause. Number one child I used flat nappies that I carefully folded every night, I was so happy to find there was more options available 6 years later, made life so much easier especially as this time we had twins. I’ve also found this time so many more mum’s using cloth than the first time. I’ve found totbots flexitots great. The combination of cover and nappy works well for us.
I have 2 different brands itti bitty and bambooty. I absolutely love my bambooties and I just ordered more! Luv them and luv that I am helping the environment!
We started using cloth when my daughter was 4 weeks old and we haven’t looked back. We now have a fluffy stash of around 80 mcn’s – it’s so addictive. I have so many I can lend then to friends to spread the green word
I love my all in ones (AIO’s), I buy 18 each time my bub moves up a size and sell my old ones for half the layout cost. I have never had to buy disposables for him and find them so easy to use. I think even my hubby has the hang of them! Why wouldnt you use cloth! Great for the environment, your pocket and your baby.
I love MCN I have 18 now, 16 Cushie Tushies and 2 Issy Bear Nappies. I think they are a fantastic way of nappying your baby and so much better for the environment. People always stop me when they see my baby girl wearing hers and tell me how gorgeous it is and where do you get them from and I tell them its a modern cloth nappy and I got it online
I don’t even mind washing them it’s so easy just chuck them in the machine and then on the line if the weather is nice or in the dryer on low.
I use mainly terry flats during the day with Baby Beehind covers, but the 1st MCNs I used were Pea-Pods and I still use them as night nappies. I’ve also got a few Nature Baby naps for newborns (which will be used again very soon).
I have even made my own terry flats with a strip of polar fleece sewn in for extra absorbancy – I call them my son’s Big Bum Nappies as they are bigger and thicker than standard TFs.
The first ones I bought were Cushie Tushies. I have aobut 9 brands to try out once baby is born, but I am most eager to try my Itti Bitti and also my bubble bubs
Can’t wait to find out what suits, and buy some in some non nuetral colours (scared I might go a bit overboard buying up actually)
I took a leap of faith and bought 20 Happy Heiny’s OSFA Pockets before my son was born. A friend had invested in when her daughter was born, but never used them, so I got a pretty good deal! We used disposables until he lost his cord stump (which was only four days!) and went straight to the MCNs and they’ve been absolutely great. I found that they didn’t quite fit around his skinny legs to begin with, but this wasn’t a problem as the microfibre inserts are so absorbent that they drink it all up before it has a chance to escape. We’ve never had a poo explosion either, the waistband on the HHs keeps everything nicely contained. Overall we love them, we’ve saved SO much $$ and the washing is not even an issue. People tell me I’m ‘brave’ for going cloth, but I’ve since converted two friends who are loving it too!
The first MCNs I bought were Bumgenius OSFM which I now use mainly at night with both boosters as my daughter is only 2 months old and was 3 weeks before I started using them.
My first cloth nappy was a system that really didn’t work for us, disana I think, when DS 1 was about 5 months old. I was browsing and looking again when he was 18mths, and couldn’t resist a dragon print ‘Wigglebums’ pocket, and have been using pockets/AIOs/fitteds since then, #1 is nearly 4, and TT’ed at 2 1/2 & night TT’ed at 3 out of cloth and baby #2 is nearly 1, and still going
I started out with 24 bumgenius v3 pockets. I won a competition for $400 worth of nappying materials so splurged on a little more including some baby beehinds and an itti bitti and my all time favourite a nicnap. Now I also make my own for myself and all my friends who are expecting babies !!
I start with those no brand nappy come from china and ends uo my twins bottom with the rash and then now just start with itti bitti and it work fine at the moment.
I wanted to use mcns with number 1 son but it was too expensive with buying all the other baby stuff needed and working as well I only managed it just before toilet training, two pocket change nappys. With number I bought before he was born, tweedle size small, fuzzibunz, peapods and bumgenius. Used them from 1 month old, pretty much only use 1 disposable a day at night time. Got rid of all the mcns I started with, now using pepenaps (very good), cherub tree and rumpa rooz.
It’s an excellent idea! I LOVE cloth diapering–for all the wonderful reasons! Every chance I get, I share how easy it is and how great it is for baby, family, environment, etc. I mostly use bumGenius but I recently discovered Bubele bums and am a big fan. I also enjoy Thirsties diaper covers with unbleached cotton prefolds.
When I first started out I was overwhelmed by the choices available and tried several, including; rumparooz, baby cheeks, pea pods and finally settled on Rocky mountain diapers. These WERE great but for the last couple of months they have been leaking.
I have just invested in some kissaluvs sized fitteds and I LOVE them.
I still use disposables at night but I’ve been looking into night nappies but I’m nervous about them since my daughter is a heavy wetter.
I used terry squares fulltime for my first child and then when my second came along decided to try some MCN.
I did alot of research and spoke to some friends and ended up purchasing three AIO Couture MCN from Cushie Tushies.
I found them to be so fantastic, the only problem I had was that I couldnt wait for them to be dry!
I ended up adding to my supply and now have a fulltime stash of beautiful Cushie Tushies Coutures. I get comments from everyone who sees them and it makes me proud to be doing the best thing for my baby and the environment!
I used traditional cloth-flat nappies on my first 2 children(my oldest is now 15) and for baby number 3 disposable nappies were alot cheaper so I started using them part time and for nights. With baby number 4 I am sad to say, I used disposables full time!
Now I have come full circle and Baby number 5 has been using a mixture of traditional flats and disposables until a few weeks ago. I went in to my local Baby store to find overnaps for my flats and was introduced to MCN. I came home with A baby first nappy, which I loved, so convienient and fits so well. I have now bought 2 other brands baby luv and babyland. Both are pocket nappies which I like less than the baby first system. I am keen to try other types now, but need to wait till next pay day!!
I used terry squares for a few weeks with my first child.
But second time around, I went cloth full-time from about day 6, when the meconium stopped LOL! He went into a Baby Beehinds bamboo fitted. And at 3 years old, those same nappies that he wore as a newborn, still fitted him. BEST investment ever!!
Oh and I handed them on to my sister when my son toilet-learned, and they’re still going strong a year later!!
My greenest nappies are now the ones I don’t put on the girls and have to wash because I’ve caught a wee or poo in the potty! We started with flat squares and went through several different types of MCN to find what worked for us. Fitteds with covers and a trigger hose for the toilet got us hooked – too easy.
We gave ourselves a couple of weeks to get used to having a newborn in the house and then converted to (virtually) exclusive use of cloth. We have never looked back!
To start with we used prefolds and bummis covers. Although the bummis super whisper have cuter designs, we found the super brite covers better for our skinny legged wee girl as the gussets at the legs were excellent. We also found the super brite covers easier to wipe and re-use.
Over the past year, I have won quite a few different brands of nappies. I think that my favourite of these has to be the green kids minky nappy… SOOOO cute!
i used cloth nappies from the very beginning. I have got plenty of them – different types and brands (all brought when they were on special so i saved money that way). My daughter is now 19 months old and number 2 is due in less than 3 months and i will use the same nappies for this bub so even more of a saving in the long run
I am due next week with my first child, and my first green nappy purchase was the Baby BeeHinds trial pack.
I have also been given the terry flats my mum used for me! And have bought some bamboo terry flats as well which I will probably use for the first couple of weeks – I have bought a couple more PUL covers from BBH.
I do have 1 box of disposables and think thats whats used in hospital but am very keen to use mainly cloth. I am concerned about the impact on health of wearing plastic/chemicals, and also cost! With the bonus of environmental benefits as well!
Hi Jane,
That’s great! I’d be thrilled to add a photo of one of your nappies to my ‘Mums Making Modern Cloth Nappies‘ gallery. Could you let me know where to find the modified Wee Weka ‘Sars Newborn Side Snap’ pattern? I googled it with no luck!
With my daughter now 11 we used mostly the old terry toweling squares. With my son now 9 I had one or two Eenie Weenies, but he was mostly in disposables (a decision my husband made as he thought it would be easier for me).
Now we are trying for #3 I am taking control back and have started to sew my own, my first trial nappy was made with a free pattern ‘Sars Newborn Sidesnap’ which is modified from the Wee Weka free pattern. It is a pocket nappy – and oh sssooo soft!
I have a few friends with newborns and soon to be newborns – so I think I will be handing a few around to trial them LOL.
I had been using cloth full time before I came across your website. Your stats on how much difference just one nappy can make are astounding. If I had not been into cloth already, it would have made me seriously consider it, for sure.
The first cloth nappy (other than the hospital cloth nappies) to cover our first son Mitchell’s bottom was a Booroi prefold. He is 2 weeks old now and we are using prefolds, Pop-ins and Green Kids. The prefolds are great for his age. I had planned to buy all the same kind of nappies but am now keen to have a couple of each kind to compare, trial and recommend to friends. Cheers!
My Green Nappy is a great idea, it offers lots of information for MCN users and non-users, and provides information on the impact on the environment. We have used MCN since 6 weeks of age, and have never looked back. A few more of our friends have converted to MCN also when they have seen just how easy it is… and great for the environment
Our first cloth was a flannel flat when my son was a newborn. I confess to using disposables for him a lot, but did use my terry flats occasionally. We went to full time cloth when I made a heap of nappies for him and bought his first brand nappies, green kids and cute tooshies bamboo delights. These are still in regular use with my second son, though they’re looking a bit worse for wear. Our current favorites are itti bitti, Auriels, Green Kids, and [made by me] Honeyboy, and Cuddlebuns.
The first brand of cloth nappies to “grace” our daughters bottom – Real Nappies prefold and covers – we received at the hospital! (Yay Waitakere Hospital in Auckland, NZ!). From there we also tried Rosie’s Naps (Now Karma Kids), Snazzipants, Fuzzibunz & Honey Child in a hire kit – awesome way to trial a whole lot of nappies! Settled on Snazzipants AIO + cover and pocket nappies that I sew myself stuffed with prefolds
My first nappy purchase was an Ecobubs pocket with wool cover, for my nephew. But fell in love and now I have bought more!
My first purchase was a couple of small Bambooty aio. I haven’t actually tested them out yet because I’m not due for a few more months. I’m looking forward to being a predominately cloth family.
I have just started using cloth nappies on my second child – who is nearly 2 months old. I wish I had used them with my first little girl! I have fitted bamboo nappies from Baby Beehinds, and a few magic all in ones from BBH too. They have both been great so far.
I have heaps, lol. Old terry squares are also great for cleaning up little accidents when toilet training. I have also got both my sisters to use cloth now, as well as a few friends.
My first was a Bumgenius pocket OSFA – 4 years ago before my first bub was born. We had 2 nappies but my husband was a stay at home dad then and he couldn’t get his head around it, so we stayed at 2 green nappies, ocassionally used until my now 8 month old came along.
I started with flats and covers and since then have extended my supply with quite a few AI2′s, pockets and prefolds. Loving the adventure that cloth brings with it. Love Jazzy Butts the most.
I used terry flats with my first son (now 9) and found some covers that didn’t seem to irritate too much. With my second son I used biodegradable disposables for the first 6 months, then on to terry flats again. I love them. So quick to dry! And easy to get the right fit.
I’ve found Baby Beehind PUL covers, which I love to bits! I have one BBH Magic-all which I don’t like as it takes so long to dry and the microfibre stays smelly, no matter how I wash it. One BBH Multi-fit pocket, which is great – it fits my skinny waist, chubby thigh boy well. And one Motherease fitted which is nice for its softness, but no more absorbent than a terry flat…
Eenee Weenee disposable pads or Moltex ‘sposies as a backup and Moltex at night.
I decided to use cloth nappies before Aiden was born. Not just for the eco side of things but for heaps of reasons… Disposables sit in your bin for a week (gross!!!), I don’t wear plastic against my skin at all let alone 24 hours a day so I wouldn’t expect my child to. I use terry towel flats, they’re cheap and easy and when they are too tatty to use as a nappy they make AWESOME cleaning rags!!
My first was a Pea Pods pocket nappy which I bought when my first daughter was 6 months. I now have a huge stash including Baby BeeHinds, Motherease (both fitted nappies), Green Kids, Swaddlebees and Bumgenius (all pockets).
I started my second daughter on MCNs when she was 8 weeks old. At three months she’s now in them full time, except overnight. I keep looking for reasons to buy more nappies!
I love my pocket nappies! Have a few different brands but are particularly fond of my Green Kids (the designs are too cute) and my Happy Heiny’s (their cow print is my favorite). I waited till Z was nearly 6 weeks before I started using the cloth nappies – just to give myself time to adjust to a newborn.
I’m only a new mummy and I’m on one hell of a learning curve! I wouldn’t look back now – I find it sooo easy to use cloth nappies and don’t know why more people don’t.
With my first daughter, soon to be 18, we used old style cloth and began the same way with my son but when I was up in Tamworth I found some peapods. Loved them and started searching the internet. Have had so many but love the patterns best for summer – have quite a few Green Kids nappies. They are easy for grandma and daddy. At nearly two it is rare for us to use anything but cloth – sadly he is toilet training…..makes me want to cry!! I just love them.
I started a month ago when my daughter was 6 months and will never look back. I borrowed two Baby BeeHinds Bamboo Fitted from a mum in mothers group. I then purchased some bamboo fitted from BBH, some Itti Bitti’s and then Genesa Forge (ooohhh nice). I love them all.
I’m going to expand with more WAHM brands and then try my own sewing. I have only had two leaks from nappies she is too small for yet, no blow-outs (woohoo) and she has a much happier little bum. Also made the switch to cloth wipes at the same time.
I purchased a few different types before my daughter (now 15 months) was born, and haven’t been impressed with any of them – various problems eg worn out elastic, the bamboo soaker pads rotting away etc, so I found a site and downloaded a free pattern and purchased the materials and have made a stash of my own pocket nappies (fairly easy if you know how to sew). I started by using hemp as the soaker, but have also made new soaker pads using microfibre towelling. Both work well, but the microfibre is lighter to carry around in the nappy bag
I have just purchased my first green nappies from Issy Bear and waiting for them to arrive. I have never used them before despite this being my third child but as they say it is never to late to start. A friend showed me hers and I loved the fit and she recommends them highly.
I used cloth almost from the beginning… Bought a huge stash of Baby Beehinds Bamboo fitteds and PUL covers before my little girl was born. She’s nearly 2 1/2 now and we’re still using them!
I had a small stash started before H was born, so the first would have been either an eenee or a Real Nappies cotton prefold. Since then – almost 7 months old now – I have a bit of a mixup stash, to see what I liked the best and what suits him. Too many styles to name, though my faves would be Baby BeeHinds multis and an itty bitty AIO.
