Discovering Modern Cloth Nappies and Eco-Friendly Disposable Nappies

My Green Nappy: Do YOU have one?

-My Green Nappy -

My Green Nappy’s mission is to see that every baby ‘down under’ has that one green nappy to wear.

Sustainable Hemp Products

Nappy Competition WINNER ANNOUNCED! Giveaway Nappy was donated by Michelle of Sustainable Hemp Products.

The simple environmental initiative is based on the collective impact of each family doing ONE thing; having a lovely time lookng around My Green Nappy, discovering all the lovely WAHM’s out there who can help you with your cloth nappy needs, introducing you to new ideas or recapping old information in a new way  - all to help you find the perfect ‘green nappy’ for your baby to wear.

That simple committment means one less disposable each time it is worn by your baby. Your baby then becomes an ambassador for ‘nappy change’, helping spread the ‘modern cloth’ nappy love and shrinking the eco footprint of baby after baby – just that little bit!

Our mission is to strive towards every baby having at least one ‘green’ nappy to wear, keeping a throwaway disposable out of the environment each time it is worn.

With over 300 thousand babies born down under each year, that one green nappy will make a difference!

Our Comment Question is:

Do YOU have a green nappy? (Has My Green Nappy inspired you to get your first one?)

We have several green nappies! Started 3.5 years ago when my eldest was 18 months with a Baby Beehinds bamboo fitted and PUL cover. I still use this nappy and cover on my 3rd child.

  2. louisa says:

I started using terry flats LOL..I then was introduced to itti by a friend. They never worked well for us so I ventured onto bbh and they are working great. We also love our issy bear nappies :-)

  3. Trinette says:

I have 20 pocket diapers (a mix from ebay mostly, but i won one also, others i purchased from America. They have snap in inserts and very easy to use.)
I was inspired by youtube channels with ladies talking about cloth diapering. Most of them were American.

  4. Amanda says:

I started with some grobaby and cushie tushies I got on sale. I laugh now when I think of how excited I was by them.
Wow has my stash grown since then, i have one or two of so many different brands and i love them all for different reasons!

Most of all I love Aussie WAHM brand nappies. There’s just too many to name but they are awesome, so beautiful and such well made nappies. Some call them show off nappies but they’re such good quality, they’re not just for show ’cause they work so well.

My advice – keep variety within your stash, you’ll find it easy to stick to cloth if it’s fun and interesting. And don’t worry about them being a bit expensive cause the quality ones will last you through many kids and then still hold resale value if you look after them.

  5. Sabrina Johnson says:

I started with some basic OSFM, Monk n Bear, Haute…. but have since branched into the gorgeousness of MCN land… it’s like I’m Charlie and have just been told that the Chocolate factory is all mine. I’ve yet to try one of Michelle’s gorgeous creations though.. Would love to try a sandman!

  6. Katrina says:

I started with some Cushie Tushies that I got while they were on sale and now have Itti’s, Swaddlebees and BBH as well. So many to try, my fav though is the Snow Pea Nappy I won in the Spring giveaway through My Green Nappy!! Yay!

  7. Alissa says:

I love my Bambooties and itti bitti’s. Your site was the first site I joined when about to join the MCN addiction! My daughter was 7 weeks when I jumped on the train and will never look back!

  8. Candice says:

I LOVE cloth nappies and they seem to be gettting better and more improved as time goes on as well. I have converted some of my firends too!!

  9. mung says:

I have just one bubba so far and have been addicted to mcn’s since she was 6 weeks old. I’d have to say my favourites are Sustainable Hemp Nappies. Firstly, because they are gorgeous and you can choose your patterns. Secondly, because Michelle is a pleasure to deal with and always happy to go to the nth degree for her customers :)

  10. Krista says:

I started my little man off with terry squares and basic covers from Big W. I was cruising along with my old-fashioned approach until I stumbled across the world of the Modern Cloth Nappy. Since that day, my bank acount has dwindled and I have come close to divorce a few times with the arrival of my new fluffy mail. So, a warning to any beginners, it WILL become an addiction but, on the flip-side, it’s unlikely that you will end up spending more money than you would have using disposables. Not to mention the peace of mind from maintaing the environment for the future of your children.

  11. tartankiwi says:

We are a prefold family and these are used on both our toddler and 8 week old. Although we have a few one off pocket nappies, our most trustworthy nappies are the prefolds! Lots of sources say that these are bulky, but we have had no problems with that. I LIKE that I don’t have to stuff anything in anywhere, and getting them on wriggly children is pretty easy with practise!
We may have to go looking for something else for mr 8 weeks though as he already requires boosters in his day nappies and wets through his nappies very quickly… he is a typical boy… a greedy guts!

  12. Nicola says:

My bubs is due the end of this month, so I haven’t used any cloth nappies as yet, I do however have 2 itti bitti AIO’s size small ready to try.

  13. Tanya says:

I have BabyBeeHinds and Bambooty, and love them both. The Bambooty fit best under clothes, but who could not love a furry baby bum?

I’m waiting for summer so I don’t have to cover up my daughter’s nappies as much and can show them off!

For anyone who has a fear of nappies with “bits and pieces”, start off your stash with all-in-ones (AIOs), and go from there.

If you have a baby-poo fear, there are always flushable, biodegradable liners you can use. And read disposable nappy packaging – you’re supposed to “remove solids before disposing”!!

  14. Renee says:

We used Itti Bitti D’Lish from when my son was 5 days old [when we came home from hospital] and we loved their trim design for such a little bubba. As soon as we started on the cloth nappies the nappy rash he had developed disappeared and hasn’t returned :) Now my little man needs something more absorbant so we use a mixture of Baby BeeHinds and Issy Bear products and Itti Bitti Wipes. My hubby who was skeptical at first has commented that he thinks the cloth nappies are easier to use than the disposables!! I love that I’m doing something great for my little man’s bottom, my pocket and the environment. Plus they look gorgeous :)

  15. Natasha says:

I use Bubbalooba brand nappies. I have some cheap china ones which arent bad but I love my AI2 one size nappies( night nappies). What I love about Bubbalooba (Kira) she will custom make the nappies. My daughter is very tall for her age and the large nappies dont fit, so Kira is currently making some 2 inches bigger than normal. She only needs them over night now as she is toilet training (2.5 years old). I have to say MCNs are becoming a hobby of mine. I look forward now to thinking of when we have another baby lol. I will never use sposies full time again!

  16. Katharine says:

I have 3 brightly coloured BONNIBUNS from a Brisbane market which are gorgeous looking with snap locks.

  17. Natasha says:

Using cloth nappies has been a ‘no brainer’ for my husband and I’. They are so easy to use (one main wash a week!)waaay cheaper, save stax of resources and they look and feel great.

We have tried quite a few styles, Eenee Weenee, Grow Baby, Earfts, and Baby Beehinds, and we also use re-usable wipes.

I keep telling people how easy it is, but I’m not sure they are convinced!

  18. Sara says:

I have purchased Pea Pods and Terry Towling nappies and hope to use these everyday when my bub arrives. I’m looking forward to helping the environment by doing my ‘little bit’, but also saving money by not using disposables. I intend to purchase more modern cloth nappies in larger sizes or perhaps the one size fits most that I have read about on some of the sponsors pages through this website.

  19. sarah says:

I have not started using cloth yet, but have just bought some itti bitti d’lish & Pea Pods and I am awaiting their arrival, we will see how we go with them!

  20. kel weir says:

FUZZI BUNZ are the cloth brand that I have been using on my 9 month old, they were passed on to me by a friend that used them for 3 of her children, and when I recieved them they were as good as new. I also have a couple of PEA PODS aswell which are also great. My first born was 15 years ago and I used the old square clothies with the plastic pants, so stoked these styles were invented inbetween ;)

  21. Belinda says:

My first MCNs were an itti bitti d’lish and some Bambooties that I started using on my little girl from about 3.5 months. I’m still building up my stash and working out what works best for us. I’m quite enjoying looking for and purchasing lots of different types of MCNs and trying not to get addicted – but it’s tough :) . I’m also already planning on what MCNs to buy for bub #2, even though it’s not even a twinkle in the eye…!

  22. Annaliese says:

At my baby shower I was given a Pea Pod in mossy green and the Babybeehinds trial pack. From there my stash has grown to include; Rumparooz, Bumgenius, Flip, Grovia and Itti bitti’s.
MCN are so cute, inexpensive and convenient. Why anyone would buy disposables is beyond me. They obviously haven’t discovered the joy of cloth.
    Let’s spread the word!!!

  23. Mel says:

My first green nappies were Happykind (i think). I bought them for my first bub almost 12 years ago. I used cloth nappies for bub 1 & 2.Bub 3 & 4 is used dispoables, but I was given some cloth nappies that weren’t AIO’S, found these great in summer but went back to disposables in winter. For bub no.5 I am looking to using green/cloth nappies. Just working out which ones will be right for us!!

  24. kimberlee says:

i have one PeaPod that i brought but still have not yet used!!
i must start to use it!!

  25. Ann says:

My first cloth nappy was given to me by a friend as a birth present for bub. It’s a Bubblebubs. Absolutely loving it. Another friend has since passed on 3 more to me & I have brought Cheeky Butts & Little Bebe ones. Am about to buy A FT set of Earfts.

  26. Emma says:

I have my son in cloth, but only started when he was around 4 months old. I’m about to have a 2nd baby and am enjoying the idea of starting from NB with baby #2… And I find the teeny-tiny MCN’s for newborns simply adorable :)

My 13 mth old son is very petite, so we use a lot of Itti Bitti D’lish, Cushie Tushies Couture, Iish Flys, and other “slimmer” fitting nappies.

I have several WAHM brands which I simply love, and I have a penchant for “pretties” – hence was so excited to find out I’m having a GIRL this time, so I can find lots of gorgeous stunning girlie naps :)

  27. Charndra says:

    Hi Vianty,
absolutely, give them a go – I recommend Krap Katchers and Sustainable Hemp Products – both NEVER leak for us! My Jett is 2 as well.

  28. Monica says:

I have Cheeky Butts and I love them. I’ve been using them since my son was 4 weeks old and I never use disposables. These nappies are fantastic, they look great on, aren’t too bulky and have bamboo and micro fibre inserts. I don’t know why you wouldn’t use cloth nappies

  29. Vianty says:

I have no green nappies but thinking to buy a night cloth nappy for my 2 years old son who is still using night nappies.

  30. Tammy says:

The first mcns I used were Baby Behinds Magicalls when my 18mnth old arrived. Now using them on my 3mnth old, along with oither brands on both bubs. Magicalls M & L sizes are great night nappies on 18mnth old at the moment as they last all night no problem. Aways wanting more mcns though, prefer osfm as my famiy avoids the backup terrys and barey have enough osfm for 2 days! Avoid disposables as much as possible.

  31. Kirsten says:

I have not long started out with cloth,on my now 10 month old son and loving it. My 1st ones to try were the itti bitti d’lish and pikapu. Im loving the cushie tushies also. I only wish MCN’s were around when my oldest daughter now 16 was a baby.

  32. Sheriann says:

My husband and i both like the MCNs and didn’t want to go the old fashioned route of terry clothes. My first newborn MCNs were great! So easy and frustration free! But i struggle to find toddler ones that hold up to my active one’s lifestyle. I would like very much to try out new and improved MCNs with my next arrival! She arrives at Christmas! What a lovely time of year to have a baby.

  33. christine says:

i have only just found cloth for my 4th who is 10 months we love it i finally have permission to spend :) one of my first nappy was one i had one from the last nappy hunt and i LOVE it so much i also have nenooh and some cheap ones that i rarely use

  34. Lyndell says:

I’m expecting my first baby … and waiting on my first delivery of 6 TotsBots nappies that I bought online. I check the mailbox everyday – hope they arrive soon! Looking forward to spreading the Green Nappy mission…

  35. Alison says:

I have bumgenius,Closeparent, babybeehinds, issybear, happybabes and rumparooz cloth nappies.. I like different things about each. Using cloth nappies is easy and great for your baby/environment. Initally It was hard to decide on the brand/type of nappy. Buying one of each and getting a demonstration helped alot.

  36. Sabrina says:

I started off with flat nappies with my first, I brought 1 of about 5 brands of MCN. Mother Ease, Tots bots (loved them but they are sized) Baby beehinds and a couple of other i can’t rememeber. Fast forward nearly 4 years and now i use pretty much only Bamboo Baby Beehinds for my second baby. I have about 30 of them. Fantastic nappies. I also practice EC, which is the most environmentally conscious way to go about a babies elimination. i mostly just use nappies at night and as a back up when we are out of the house.

  37. Tamara says:

i <3 mcn's my baby has NEVER had nappy rash, when my friends bubs who are in disposibles have!

  38. Kari Beaven says:

An old-fashioned flat-nap was our first, tied up the way our mums always did! Not on purpose mind, it’s just that I had to fly off the island to have our wee man and didn’t think to bring any with me. Baby Cheeks are awesome, the elastic inside the legs is adjustable, so the nappy literally grows as he does but without that MASSIVE folded-up look when he’s little. Have a major hotch-potch stash and recommend this as ideal, as they change so much over the first year that their nappy needs change too.

  39. Lou says:

I wanted to have a fluffy bummed baby even before I was pregnant. Helps the environment, helps my baby and helps my purse! I have 6 different brands and they all have their benefits. It’s all about trial and error and playing with combinations of liners, soakers, boosters etc. LOVE THEM!!!!

  40. Rubina says:

I currently own 12 nappies, all of differnt kinds, love them to bits !

  41. Annette says:

I have about 20 cloth diapers…It is the only way to go for our family. The first one we used was a GroBaby.

  42. Alison says:

I just won two MCN from Bonnibuns on Facebook and are so keen to try them, I have always been meaning to use cloth nappies but have just been lazy and never got around to getting some. After i try the two i won, i am hoping I will become and convert as we will need the extra money with buying a new house

  43. Louise says:

I have 12 Modern Cloth Nappies awaiting the birth of my child – due exactly 5 weeks from now. They are washed and ready to go and I am so eager to use them.

The comments I am getting from people are so negative, can’t wait for them to see how cute these nappies are, and hopefully convince them to change too :)

  44. Katie says:

My first baby is due later this month and we have decided to try to use modern cloth nappies. At first my husband was a bit apprehensive when he saw how much they were to start up but now he is very keen to tell others about the benefits as well.

We have got a few of different brands like Cushie Tushies, Itti bitti, Baby BeeHinds and Blueberry and will get more of the ones we like best.
I am looking forward to trying them out.

  45. Nicolette says:

Just gave birth to a teeny tiny baby girl and none of my cloth naps fit her, but then neither do disposables. I was sorting out some baby clothes and came across some 0000 eenee weenee covers that I was given when I had my son which he never fit into. With a stash of peapod bamboo inners we now have small cloth nappies :)

  46. jo says:

We have about 9 green nappies already for our little boy due in early Aug. We have bought about 4 brands, Sunbaby (not expecting much from this one as its a thin cheapy looking thing, bought off ebay), Green Kids, Baby BeeHinds multifit, Abby Gro was suggested to me by my sister so I got a couple of these. The last 3 look really good as they come with bamboo pads to put in them.

I’m willing to try more brands if I hear they are good :) Green nappies only cost around $1000 a year and disposables are $3000! What a difference. + Green nappies are cuter and come in so many colours. Best of all green nappies won’t be in landfil for hundreds of years like disposables!!! :D Good for us all

  47. Tarah says:

My boy is 8 months and we have just started we started out with one and i have just brought 24 we are slowly going towards cloth full time this site is one of the ones that made me decide to go cloth i discovered it when i did the cloth nappy hunt back in March through Diaper decisions.

  48. Monica says:

When I told my friends at my baby shower that I wanted to use cloth nappies, they all were shocked and so negative. Well I decided I would be the first to try then convert then to the wonderful world of MCNs.
My 3 month old has had GreenKids nappies plus a few pea pods that someone gave me.
I love them and will get more so I never have to use disposables again for any other babies I may have.

  49. catherine says:

I have 5 children and have exclusively used cloth for all of them. I started with terry squares for my first 4 and now can’t get enough of MCNs for my youngest. I have been trying to spread the cloth word since I had my first (now he is 13). Loving this campaign !

  50. Nicole says:

Love my Bumgenius and Flip nappies (and can’t wait till the new Bumgenius nappy is revealed tomorrow! Nurture Nappies was a great website to help me to make my decision – there are soooo many good brands out there!! I’d never go back to disposables – there’s so much going for cloth!
