How do you make your own cloth nappies?

It’s fun to have a go at making your own nappy – perhaps to save money, do some recycling of fabrics and challenge yourself to make some hand-made, home-made nappies for your own baby. It can be a pleasant diversion, some ‘me’ time and great fun.

It does, of course, give you an appreciation for the skills and efforts of the seamstresses making oodles of these technically perfect nappies for people to buy for their baby.

How they do that with little children around BAFFLES me! My sewing attempts since babies came along are downright bodgy, I have NO patience with the sewing machine, a breaking thread sends me into a rage of “ARGH – That’s wasted time I don’t have!” and so browsing ‘in stocks’ of what I want is the far calmer and peaceful option, he he he.

Sara – I KNOW! They are so beautiful and creative – I’m doing a bit of embroidery for our wedding quilt at the moment – it has only taken me 5 years to get around to it properly – then son #2 took my embroidery hoop and dropped it in the garden for a week – I just found it yesterday. So many silly obstacles to creativity!

I wish I had more time to create…. sigh…. All these nappies look great.

The floral pink/sage fitted nappy above was made by recycling a cotton prefold (after seeing instructions on how to do that on a US website which I’ve forgotten!)
The floral pink/cream frilly one is an AIO recycled hemp prefold with shower curtain lining for waterproofing (very tiny – that’s my girl at 3 months).

I really need to get off my tush and try making my own – you girls have made some awesome nappies!

Oh yay – I love seeing what other people have created! I’ve sent through a couple of mine, so hope they get ‘published’ too!

We used the Wee Weka OSFA pattern to make the blue fleece AIO above. It’s a lovely pattern, I only added the sizeable snaps to make it more versatile from newborn. I wouldn’t recommend using the wind stop fleece though – PUL is better for waterproofing. Great pattern though!
