For today’s topic we’ve asked our Nappy WAHM’s about blow-outs! Nappy blow-outs! I’m pleased to have contributions from many friends of My Green Nappy included in this article. We have Emma from Brindabella Baby, Melinda from Avanappy, Mel from Little Para Pants, Louise from Scamps Boutique, Eva from Oz Baby Trends, Inge from Earth Kidz, Kyra of Bubbalooba, Cassandra from New Age Nappies, Annette from Iish Fly, Michelle from Issy Bear Nappies, Alisha from Baby Safari, Ashley from Cheeky Creations, Carli from MiniLaLa, Bec from Baby Chilli, Kelleigh from Miracle Baby, Julie from Cloth For Comfort, Peggy from Fluffy Bubs and Kate from Nappy Days, Sasha from Green Kids, Michelle from Sustainable Hemp Products. Let’s see what they have to say:
Emma Davidson of Brindabella Baby:
When I put a Bumwear cover with gusset over a Mandy Mac nappy I have three layers of leg elastic to prevent explosions out the leg hole. I also like Mandy Macs because they fasten with a Snappi or pin, so I get a perfect fit around the legs no matter what shape or size my baby is. And the nappy doesn’t change size or shape as it starts to absorb wetness into gel crystals like disposables do – so the fit is the same whether wet or dry.
Melinda of Avanappy:
Better elastic than disposables and far more absorbent meaning less leakage from the nappy.
Cassandra of New Age Nappies:
Gussets!
Louise of Scamps Boutique, NZ:
It’s all in the design and fit! The snug fit around waist and legs prevents any blow outs escaping.
Annette of Iish Fly:
As far as blow outs go, I remember Ella at 2 weeks of age having a huge blow out on Santa’s knee when she went to get photos taken she was wearing a disposable on that day. MCN’s have a lot of advantages over disposables in helping prevent these sorts of blow outs as most like Iish Fly Nappies use a gusset system which gives extra space to hold in large explosive movements!
Ashley of Cheeky Creations:
I will admit that I have occassionally put my kids in a disposable nappy. I tend to get really big poo blowouts in them though – it goes all up their back and out the legs! I very rarely get a poo blowout with my cloth nappies. Cheeky Creations Pocket Nappies fit snugly around baby’s legs and back and catch the poo fast.
I use the Motherease One-Size nappy and Sandys nappies and these are much more reliable. I have never had a ‘blow-out’ of the baby variety with these as they are better at containing mess, including newborn poo. Motherease One-size Nappies. Motherease Sandys Nappies.
The shape and patterns of MCN make life significantly easier than the flat towelling nappies. By contouring around the body you ensure a snug fit that moves with the baby, and avoids ‘escape routes’ from forming. My customers-to-be are amazed when I tell them how few blow-outs we have experienced while using modern nappies! A Cloth for Comfort modern nappy being worn on Julie’s bub.
As for ‘blow outs’, personally, I have had far less ‘blow outs’ in cloth than disposables.
Because they fit so much better than a disposable and the fitted nappies especially perform far better than a disposable.
They generally have better coverage and are more secure around the legs, nappies with gussets are great for stopping blow-outs.
Definitely no nappy blow outs here! Green Kids nappies have really good coverage and absorbency. It’s really important to be able to rely on a nappy to keep in any ‘pooslosions’ as they have become known!
A fantastic fit!
