Meet Our Guest: Destination Green

Let’s Meet Emma, the proud owner of Destination Green:

Hi, my name is Emma and I’m from Sydney. I started my career as a waste educator and currently work as an environmental scientist. I am definitely a “greenie” at heart and initially loved the idea that i could help minimise my first born daughters carbon footprint by using cloth nappies. Seeing how easy it was we are continuing to use them on our second! Just to take it that one step further we started Destination Green to get more people using them!

About Destination Green:

My husband and I own “Destination Green”. It seems all the nappy shops/brands have cute and fluffy names but we came up with the name Destination Green as we want to grow over time to become more than just nappies. We want to become the go-to shop for all things sustainable especially for those on a budget.

Destination Green sells pocket one size fits most nappies, we also have newborn/premmie nappies, with bamboo and double gusset nappies coming soon. We have loads of nappy accessories including some great wet bags and bamboo training pants.

We offer all our facebook fans/likers a FREE gift with their first purchase, and we are always having other specials.

As an environmental scientist i have concerns about all aspects of the environment especially with regard to climate change. Anything we can do to minimise our impact on the environment and help others do the same by making sustainable purchases for our children will help, remembering “every little bit counts”.

When you visit Destination Green make sure you have a look at:

  1. Our Shop – all our cute designer nappies at affordable prices.
  2. Nappy Debate – get real life calculations on how much you can save by using modern cloth nappies.
  3. Blog – It’s not just about bums! It’s about giving you ideas on how to embed sustainability into your children’s life.

Here are three of my favourite sites:

  1. Nappies on a mission – if you no longer need your cloth nappies consider donating them to orphanages through nappies on a mission.
  2. An amazing mum entrepreneur network
  3. Amazing pre-natal, post-natal pilates and massage

Question for readers: How did you convince your partners to go on the cloth nappy journey with you?

Meet Our Guest: Pepper Place – Modern Cloth Nappies and more!

Let’s Meet Kelly from Pepper Place:

Hi! My name is Kelly and I live in Tasmania (currently…..we move quite a bit!). I have a husband and five kids between 8 and 3. That’s their ages, not the only time in the day that I have them-so life is busy, but that’s just the way I like it. Something about me? I’m always experimenting with things. I always need a challenge, either in my hobbies (sewing, crochet, gardening, cooking) to our lifestyle (like living off-grid recently for 18 months, then travelling in a tent for nine months). The current (and long-term ongoing) project is increasing the amount of food we produce ourselves-recently adding meat, an interesting learning curve for former vegetarians.

About Pepper Place…

– My specialty is one-size nappies. I had my kids close, and had three kids in full-time nappies for a long time. I noticed there really wasn’t much difference in nappy sizes, and they all seemed to fit for much longer than the size recommendations, so after making sized fitteds to sell for a year or so I decided one-size was the way to go. Lots of others seem to share my view!
I give discounts for people with a Carers Card. Kids with special needs usually need to spend longer in nappies-my son with special needs was in day nappies until 3 and continues to wear a night nappy at 6. When you need so much more every saving counts.
– I’ve recently started selling tie-dyed kids clothes after turning my kids into rainbows for the past four years-although there’s not many pictures up yet, they’ll keep coming as I love doing it.

Our Planet Matters!

Oh dear, I’m a rampant greenie, where do I start?! If I had to pick just one thing to stop, it would be our silly, greedy use of resources. We’re gobbling up all of our non-renewable resources at a truly mind-boggling rate, mostly on silly things that we don’t need that don’t improve our quality of life -and very few people are planning for what we’re all going to do when it starts to run out.

When you visit Pepper Place, make sure you have a look at:

1. My tutorials, I love encouraging DIY-so much so that i’m releasing my patterns for home and licensed use in early 2013.
2. My product information – everything explained.

3 of my favourite sites are:

1. Eden Seeds – as a keen gardener this is my favourite site to make orders from.
2. Milkwood Permaculture – I love what these guys do! From rocket stoves to inground aquaponics, there’s always something to get me thinking.
3. Auslan Signbank – with a partially deaf child Auslan was our natural choice for our home education second language…….and it’s so much fun!

A question from Kelly:

One-sized nappies or multi-sized nappies-what’s your preference and why?

Meet Our Guest: Billy and the Bow Wow

Billy and The BowwowLet’s meet Sarah, the proud owner of Billy and the Bow Wow:

Hi I’m Sarah, I live in Adelaide South Australia and have two gorgeous boys, currently aged 1 and 2.

About Billy and the Bow Wow…

I got into the world of nappy making  by starting out making nappies for my sons.  I was absolutely hooked on MCNs and it was the only way to afford my habit! Additionally, I never really found a nappy that suited me perfectly, so after a lot of research and testing I came up with a day and night nappy that stood the test my heavy wetter’s put it to.  Once I had a stash for them, I didn’t want what I learnt to go to waste and hence Billy and the Bow Wow was born. Since then I have branched out into a range of products that I also retail, mostly nappy related, all baby and mum related. All are products that I have tried and tested with my two boys and I have found very useful. The name Billy and the Bow Wow comes from nick names we use for my two sons which is a nice connection I think. I often have specials for fans of my facebook page Billy and the Bow Wow so make sure you come and say Hi so you are in the loop.

Our Planet Matters!

Using cloth nappies is one of the simplest things you can do to help the environment. It also makes sense, economically and in that you know exactly what your baby’s precious skin is coming into contact with, which cannot be said for most disposables.  There are a lot of babies in the world, who will one day hold the future of the planet in their hands, and be responsible for cleaning up the mess we’ve made, it doesn’t make sense that one of their first acts is to have such a huge impact on the planet by creating so much landfill that will still be there thousands of years after they’ve been and gone. Cloth nappies these days deserve a go. They work just as well as disposables, they don’t create any more washing than young kids already do and the environment and your hip pocket will thank you.

When you visit Billy and the Bow Wow, make sure you have a look at…

1. Our cloth nappy range

2. Our toilet training pants and accessories

3. Our sale items (there’s always something on sale at BTBW!)

3 of my favourite sites are:

1. Adelaide Baby Bargains – a fantastic SA site for buying and selling used baby goods

2. Kozy Carrier – A fantastic Mei Tai carrier that enables you to wear your baby from birth right through to toddlerhood in comfort (for both of you).

3. My Green Nappy of course!

Let’s talk more!

If you could have all of your favorite features in one cloth nappy what would it look like?

Meet Our Guest: Bouncing Sprouts

Visit Bouncing Sprouts

Bouncing Sprouts

Let’s meet Kate from Bouncing Sprouts:

Hi, I’m Kate and I’m a medical scientist, a wife & most importantly a Mummy! Whilst pregnant, working and living in Europe, I discovered Baba+Boo nappies and I was instantly hooked. I wanted to use modern cloth nappies (MCNs) with our daughter but didn’t want to pay a fortune for a product which I knew very little about and had no experience with.

I put my research skills into action; I ordered 10 nappies and discovered how affordable, economical, absorbent & stylish Baba+Boo nappies actually are. Since then, I have fallen in love with Baba+Boo’s nappies, I moved back to Australia and I set out on a mission to bring Baba+Boo to you!

Baba+Boo nappies receive brilliant reviews from independent parents and fantastic testimonials from customers. They have been produced under strict ethical codes of conduct and designed so customers can assure that the products their baby is wearing works just as well, if not better, as other leading brands.

About Bouncing Sprouts…

At Bouncing Sprouts we aim to bring you the best quality European products at affordable prices. We are passionate about cloth nappies, the environment & all things baby. My team and I are always on hand to offer advice about nappies, just give us a call, email us or join us on Facebook.

Our Planet Matters!

In Australia, up to 2.2 million disposable nappies are used daily (calculated on 1 child under the age of 2.5, wearing 6 disposable nappies each day). This equates to 734 kg of domestic waste per year. Disposable nappies contain toxins and plastics which need to be exposed to oxygen and sunlight to decompose, however, this take about 500 years to break down. This means that every disposable nappy, since their invention in 1961, sent to landfill is still there and will be for generations to come.

It is well known that traditional and modern cloth nappies (MCNs) avoid the problem of contributing to landfill and have a positive environmental impact. MCNs use 20 times less raw materials, 2 times less water and 3 times less energy to make. The carbon footprint for MCNs is dependent on conditions of washing and drying which can be anywhere between 81% -38% lower than disposable nappies depending on factors such as water temperature, use of dryers and use by subsequent children.

Next time you are at the supermarket bear in mind that it takes 6000 disposable nappies to get one child through birth to potty training but only 30 modern cloth nappies for the same period. Get on board and put the poo where it belongs – in the loo!
