Hi, my name is Angie and I am the proud owner of Piggy Tails Nappies and even prouder (if that is a word) mum of 3 adorable children under the age of 5.
By day I am a lawyer (on maternity leave: please don’t hold that against me) and by night I am a cloth nappy addict (lol)! My aim is to convert as many disposable nappy users to cloth as I can, one MCN at a time.

About Piggy Tails Nappies…

Piggy Tails is a family owned Brisbane based business, which was established after the birth of my 3rd baby when I decided to switch to cloth nappies and ditch the ugly disposables. I loved them so much, I decided to share with everyone else and educate people on the benefits of cloth as much as I can.

After much research into the cloth nappy industry, I decided to open Piggy Tails which specialises in the sale of high quality modern cloth nappies and provides unbiased and independent information to parents who are seeking to make the switch to cloth.

I sell only quality nappies but most importantly all the nappies I stock have been personally tested by me on at least one of my three little angels (yes – my nappy stash is to die for now). I have done all the research and testing for you, all that you need to do is decide which beautiful nappy and colour you will choose.

I value our customers and especially appreciate new customers that choose to shop with us and make the big decision to go cloth or switch to cloth. For this reason I am currently offering a one off $15 discount for new customers and I am in the process of establishing a rewards program, so stay tuned. Our Planet Matters!

What concerns me the most from an environmental prospective is that not enough people understand the effect of using disposable nappies on the environment or just how many of these little terrors they will go through in their lifetime. It is costing our Councils too much money to keep these in landfill and they take far too long to break down. I am not a hippy, but every little bit I can do (without breaking my budget and breaking out into tie died dresses and dreadlocks) helps. I try to do what I can.

Reusable Nappies: What are Some Top Tips For Using Modern Cloth Nappies In Summer, Or In The Tropics?

In very hot weather, some people worry that having a bulky cloth nappy, might make a baby too hot.  On the whole though, cloth nappies tend to be cooler, than a plastic wrapped disposable nappy.  Where possible, using natural fibres helps to regulate temperatures, while some of the very thin, modern, synthetic fabrics that are available are great for ensuring that there isn’t lots of hot, bulky material in the area.  A really hot day is a great chance for some nappy off time though, letting a bit of air get to a part of your babies body that’s usually covered.

We asked our customers this question, as we’d had queries from mums concerned with sweaty bottoms as well as drying nappies in areas of high rainfall & humidity. We got a great variety of responses from parents with tropical experience which we posted on our blog here.

Summer is the perfect season for cloth nappying! Nappies are at times dry in a matter of hours in the summer sun, and there is no need to hide those delicious prints under clothes. If you are using a fitted nappy, summer is the time to leave the cover off and change when the outside is damp to increase airflow and allow those little butts time to breath.

Go with breathable fibres, such as bamboo. These nappies are not waterproof but during the warmer months you won’t be covering up bub with clothes so you will feel when bub is damp. These nappies will allow bubs skin to breathe. Don’t forget that wool covers are the best covers to use all year round as they allow your babies skin to breathe and they help moisture to evaporate.

Use cotton or natural fibres as much as you can to allow your baby’s skin to breath. And have naked time too!!

Washable Nappies: Top Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter?

In the winter, it’s a good idea to use natural fibres as much as possible.  Wool for example, as an outer layer is breathable, and helps to regulate your babies temperature.  Even on very cold days, a wet nappy won’t feel cold against your babies skin.

We live in Melbourne, so we can sometimes have issues getting nappies dry without resorting to a dryer (which we do, now and again!). It’s actually not too bad if you’re home most days as nappies dry quite well on a clothes horse in front of the heater or over a vent. If finding drying time is an issue, and your stash is primarily made up of Pockets or All-in-2s, investing in a few extra inserts or boosters can be a great way of stretching your stash. The shells of Pocket and AI2 nappies dry quickly so can be reused fairly soon after washing, if you’ve got extra inserts on hand. If you prefer Fitted or All-in-One nappies, then adding a few extra to your stash (especially those with faster drying microfibre) can be a way of giving your nappies a little more drying time.

My favourite nappies in winter are pocket nappies or a system where you can separate the cover from your inserts. These nappies dry quicker and are ready to use again.

Have a mixture of bamboo & polyester nappies in your stash, also nappies that come apart well as it will speed up drying time. AIOs are a great option for an easy to use nappy, but take longer to dry. Nappies hung on a clothes airer that can be moved in front of a sunny window, or any other source of heat will dry in a couple of days.

Use Pikapu nappies and nappies with microfibre inserts during winter. They dry so much faster than any other material. They man made fibres do tend to build up with washing powders, so using a hot wash with cannesten during winter will keep those stinky smells away.

It’s not always easy to get nappies dry in the winter but I would definitely recommend using the sun as much as you can before using the dryer. There’s no shame in using the dryer sometimes, but the sun is the best thing you can use for stains and smells.

I usually put my nappies outside at least for a little while, or in an under covered area, and then finish them off in the dryer on a low setting.
