Let’s see what they have to say:

What do you recommend as the best cloth nappy for My Baby with ‘Thunder Thighs?

Carly from Pikapu Modern Cloth Nappies:

Pikapu is a great choice for babies with larger legs, the nappy fits up to 18kg (with reports it fits up to 20kg) so it has plenty of room to grow with your bub.

Helen from EzyPeezies:

I would recommend EzyPeezies pull-up bamboo nappies as the best modern cloth nappy for ‘thunder thighs’. The largest size adjustment comfortably suits toddlers well past 3 and the super elastic waists mean that they have a lot of give and room to move.  I have designed these nappies myself, based on my knowledge, experience and needs as a cloth nappy-ing mum of two. .They also pull up and down easily when they reach the standing stage, making them super easy to change on the go and fantastic for toilet training.

Kate from Bouncing Sprouts:

Baba + Boo, UK award winning nappies as they are adjustable by poppers from birth (approx. 3.5kg) to potty training (approx. 15kg).  Baba + Boo nappies have been designed by Eve Bell to ensure the best fit possible for your little one.  They are not a generic nappy made in China with the Baba+Boo brand attached, they are one of a kind.

Reusable Nappies: Top Tips For Using Modern Cloth Nappies In Summer, Or In The Tropics

Reusable Nappies: Using Modern Cloth Nappies In Summer and In The Tropics

Discover Our Nappy Experts’ Top Tips For Using Modern Cloth Nappies During Hot or Steamy Weather…

Our Nappy Experts are invited to contribute to these cooperative questions so that you get a range of informative and experienced responses about the topic. Enjoy and discover something new, and share with us in the comment box below. This is MCN advice from a series by the Autumn 2011 sponsors of the Green Promise Nappy Event.

Let’s see what they have to say about our mcn question:

Reusable Nappies: What are Some Top Tips For Using Modern Cloth Nappies In Summer, Or In The Tropics?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

In very hot weather, some people worry that having a bulky cloth nappy, might make a baby too hot.  On the whole though, cloth nappies tend to be cooler, than a plastic wrapped disposable nappy.  Where possible, using natural fibres helps to regulate temperatures, while some of the very thin, modern, synthetic fabrics that are available are great for ensuring that there isn’t lots of hot, bulky material in the area.  A really hot day is a great chance for some nappy off time though, letting a bit of air get to a part of your babies body that’s usually covered.

Fiona from Darlings Downunder:

We asked our customers this question, as we’d had queries from mums concerned with sweaty bottoms as well as drying nappies in areas of high rainfall & humidity. We got a great variety of responses from parents with tropical experience which we posted on our blog here.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

Summer is the perfect season for cloth nappying! Nappies are at times dry in a matter of hours in the summer sun, and there is no need to hide those delicious prints under clothes. If you are using a fitted nappy, summer is the time to leave the cover off and change when the outside is damp to increase airflow and allow those little butts time to breath.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Go with breathable fibres, such as bamboo. These nappies are not waterproof but during the warmer months you won’t be covering up bub with clothes so you will feel when bub is damp. These nappies will allow bubs skin to breathe. Don’t forget that wool covers are the best covers to use all year round as they allow your babies skin to breathe and they help moisture to evaporate.

Jane from Little Bear Bums:

Use cotton or natural fibres as much as you can to allow your baby’s skin to breath. And have naked time too!!

Our Comment Question is about Using Reusable Nappies in the Summer:

Tell us the strategies you use to fend off the issues of a hot baby and steamy weather?

Washable Nappies: Top Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter

Washable Nappies: Need Some Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter?

Using Cloth Nappies In Winter Is Easy; Just Read On To Discover Our Nappy Experts’ Advice…

Washable Nappies: Top Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

In the winter, it’s a good idea to use natural fibres as much as possible.  Wool for example, as an outer layer is breathable, and helps to regulate your babies temperature.  Even on very cold days, a wet nappy won’t feel cold against your babies skin.

Fiona from Darlings Downunder:

We live in Melbourne, so we can sometimes have issues getting nappies dry without resorting to a dryer (which we do, now and again!). It’s actually not too bad if you’re home most days as nappies dry quite well on a clothes horse in front of the heater or over a vent. If finding drying time is an issue, and your stash is primarily made up of Pockets or All-in-2s, investing in a few extra inserts or boosters can be a great way of stretching your stash. The shells of Pocket and AI2 nappies dry quickly so can be reused fairly soon after washing, if you’ve got extra inserts on hand. If you prefer Fitted or All-in-One nappies, then adding a few extra to your stash (especially those with faster drying microfibre) can be a way of giving your nappies a little more drying time.

Karen from Baby Blossom:

My favourite nappies in winter are pocket nappies or a system where you can separate the cover from your inserts. These nappies dry quicker and are ready to use again.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

Have a mixture of bamboo & polyester nappies in your stash, also nappies that come apart well as it will speed up drying time. AIOs are a great option for an easy to use nappy, but take longer to dry. Nappies hung on a clothes airer that can be moved in front of a sunny window, or any other source of heat will dry in a couple of days.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Use Pikapu nappies and nappies with microfibre inserts during winter. They dry so much faster than any other material. They man made fibres do tend to build up with washing powders, so using a hot wash with cannesten during winter will keep those stinky smells away.

Jane from Little Bear Bums:

It’s not always easy to get nappies dry in the winter but I would definitely recommend using the sun as much as you can before using the dryer. There’s no shame in using the dryer sometimes, but the sun is the best thing you can use for stains and smells.
I usually put my nappies outside at least for a little while, or in an under covered area, and then finish them off in the dryer on a low setting.

Our Comment Question is about Using Washable Nappies in Winter:

How do you dry your washable nappies in winter while keeping them in good condition?

Reusable Night Nappies: How Many Modern Nappies Will I Need For A Toddler?

Reusable Night Nappies: How Many Modern Nappies Will I Need For A Toddler?

Toddlers wee more than smaller babies, and may generally sleep longer. Discover How Many Reusable Night Nappies You Should Aim For, and The Best Night Modern Cloth Nappy Brands…

Our Nappy Experts are invited to contribute to these cooperative questions so that you get a range of informative and experienced responses about the topic. Enjoy and discover something new, and share with us in the comment box below.

Let’s see what they have to say about our Modern Cloth Nappy question:

Reusable Night Nappies: How Many Modern Nappies Will I Need For A Toddler?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

For night time use, you will need at least 3 nappies; a wash and a wear, and another, just as a back up.  A quick drying nappy that you can boost, such as the Little-ducks toddler night nappy, is ideal, as it can be nice and absorbent, but still quick drying.

Fiona from Darlings Downunder:

How many night nappies you need will depend on your drying capabilities and how often you wash. Night nappies often come apart for faster drying time, but they still take longer than most nappies to dry. If you’re washing and drying every day (throwing the nappy in with the regular washing or hand washing the nappy in the morning), then you could conceivably get away with only one, but two is a much more reasonable minimum, with three being a comfortable number, unless you wish to wash less frequently. We’d usually recommend starting with two or three night nappies and getting extra ones if you find you need them.

Karen from Baby Blossom:

As your baby grows, you will find you need less and less nappies per day. How many you need will still be determined by your baby and how many reusable nappies you can manage to use.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

24 nappies would allow you to wash every 2-3 days, and have dry nappies for the days you are washing. If you have a really heavy wetter and are changing your toddler more frequently, another 6 will have you sorted out!

Misty from FluffyBuns:

3-4, this way you always have a backup one in case they poo right after you put the nappy on, and if there is one wet, you always have one ready.

Jane from Little Bear Bums:

If you are using cloth full time, I would recommend having 4. So you have 2 days worth, and then an extra day for washing day – and when it comes to night nappies, it never hurts to have a spare lying around in case of emergencies / accidents / spills – I’m sure you know what I mean!! And there’s nothing worse than needing to change your baby in the middle of the night and not having what you need on hand!

Our Comment Question is about Reusable Night Nappies:

Tell us which brands of reusable nighttime nappies you think are the best?

Reusable Nappies: How To Use Inserts And Boosters To Prevent Leaks And Extend The Absorption Of Your Baby’s Nappy

Reusable Nappies: How To Use Inserts And Boosters With Your Modern Cloth Nappy.

Discover How Cloth Nappy Inserts and Cloth Nappy Boosters Can Prevent Leaks and Extend The Absorption Of Your Baby’s Reusable Nappy…

Reusable Nappies: How To Use Inserts And Boosters To Prevent Leaks And Extend The Absorption Of Your Baby’s Nappy.

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

One of the key things when using inserts or boosters, is to mix and match the types of fabrics that the pads are made from.  That way you can take advantage of the different properties that they have.  Some pads, such as those made of microfibre absorb liquid quickly, but will also release it if squashed, in the same way a sponge does.  Others, such as hemp, holds large amounts of liquid, and holds onto it well, but is much slower to absorb the water.  Combining qualities such as these, you can have the best of both worlds.

Karen from Baby Blossom:

If you need to use extra boosting it is very easy to add extra layers to a nappy. Just check to see if you still have a great fit around the legs to ensure no leaks. If your nappy is leaking and all the boosters are saturated inside your nappy, you can usually just add extra boosters. If you are getting leaks and the nappy is not soaking inside, then you do not have a good fit around the legs or the inserts are not absorbing quickly enough for your baby. Try using a microfiber insert closest to the baby’s bottom, making sure there is a microfleece layer between the skin and insert. Microfibre is a very fast absorbing fabric, where bamboo will hold more liquid.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

Inserts and boosters allow you to adjust where the most absorbent part of the nappy is, and can be tailored to fit your baby perfectly. In the case of a tummy sleeper, you would fold or add boosters to the front of the nappy as this is where most of the moisture will go.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Make sure that boosters and inserts are not hanging out of the cover or nappy shell if they are this may cause leaks. Extra boosters are needed for night time and for bubs that are heavier wetters. Before purchasing your nappies ask your retailer which nappies they feel would suit your bub. Many retailers (such as ours) will allow you to see them in person and ‘try’ some nappies out to see if they fit.

Our Comment Question is about Modern Cloth Nappy Inserts and Boosters:

Reusable Nappies: How Many Modern Nappies Will I Need To Use Them Part Time With A Crawling Baby?

Reusable Nappies: How Many Modern Nappies Will I Need Part Time?

Is Your Baby Crawling? Discover How Many Modern Nappies You Will Need To Use Them Part Time…

Let’s see what they have to say:

Reusable Nappies: How Many Modern Nappies Will I Need To Use Them Part Time With A Crawling Baby?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

You need as many nappies as you are able to wash and dry, without running out.  When only using them part time, this will mean that you need a few less, as you’ll have longer to get them washed and dry again.  Around 10 nappies should be enough to begin with.

Karen from Baby Blossom:

As your baby grows, you will find you need less and less nappies per day. How many you need will still be determined by your baby and how many reusable nappies you can manage to use.

Liz from Hatchlings Cloth Nappies:

Well this is a math question really, and it depends on how heavy a wetter your baby is, how many nappies per day you want to use cloth and how many disposable, what type of cloth nappy you are buying, and how often you want to do washing.
If you want to use most of your day time nappies as cloth, and your bubs is not a super heavy wetter, your cloth nappies have a 3-ish hour absorbency level and you want to wash every second day I would recommend 8 to 12 nappies for part time use – simple, right? 🙂

Kendall from Australian Baby Supplies:

How many nappies you need will depend on how often/how much your baby wets. The number needed for part time will also depend on if you are just using them during the day or if only using them when you are at home. 12 nappies will be enough for most babies if you wash every two days. It is recommended that you wash at least every two days for your nappies to keep in great condition.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

18 nappies would be enough for you to be in cloth most of the day, and be able to wash every second day.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Part time – 12 nappies, 24 if you don’t want to wash everyday.
