Reusable Nappies: Using Modern Cloth Nappies In Summer and In The Tropics

Discover Our Nappy Experts’ Top Tips For Using Modern Cloth Nappies During Hot or Steamy Weather…

Our Nappy Experts are invited to contribute to these cooperative questions so that you get a range of informative and experienced responses about the topic. Enjoy and discover something new, and share with us in the comment box below. This is MCN advice from a series by the Autumn 2011 sponsors of the Green Promise Nappy Event.

Let’s see what they have to say about our mcn question:

Reusable Nappies: What are Some Top Tips For Using Modern Cloth Nappies In Summer, Or In The Tropics?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

In very hot weather, some people worry that having a bulky cloth nappy, might make a baby too hot.  On the whole though, cloth nappies tend to be cooler, than a plastic wrapped disposable nappy.  Where possible, using natural fibres helps to regulate temperatures, while some of the very thin, modern, synthetic fabrics that are available are great for ensuring that there isn’t lots of hot, bulky material in the area.  A really hot day is a great chance for some nappy off time though, letting a bit of air get to a part of your babies body that’s usually covered.

Fiona from Darlings Downunder:

We asked our customers this question, as we’d had queries from mums concerned with sweaty bottoms as well as drying nappies in areas of high rainfall & humidity. We got a great variety of responses from parents with tropical experience which we posted on our blog here.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

Summer is the perfect season for cloth nappying! Nappies are at times dry in a matter of hours in the summer sun, and there is no need to hide those delicious prints under clothes. If you are using a fitted nappy, summer is the time to leave the cover off and change when the outside is damp to increase airflow and allow those little butts time to breath.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Go with breathable fibres, such as bamboo. These nappies are not waterproof but during the warmer months you won’t be covering up bub with clothes so you will feel when bub is damp. These nappies will allow bubs skin to breathe. Don’t forget that wool covers are the best covers to use all year round as they allow your babies skin to breathe and they help moisture to evaporate.

Jane from Little Bear Bums:

Use cotton or natural fibres as much as you can to allow your baby’s skin to breath. And have naked time too!!

Our Comment Question is about Using Reusable Nappies in the Summer:

Tell us the strategies you use to fend off the issues of a hot baby and steamy weather?

Washable Nappies: Top Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter

Washable Nappies: Need Some Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter?

Using Cloth Nappies In Winter Is Easy; Just Read On To Discover Our Nappy Experts’ Advice…

Washable Nappies: Top Tips For Using Cloth Nappies In Winter?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

In the winter, it’s a good idea to use natural fibres as much as possible.  Wool for example, as an outer layer is breathable, and helps to regulate your babies temperature.  Even on very cold days, a wet nappy won’t feel cold against your babies skin.

Fiona from Darlings Downunder:

We live in Melbourne, so we can sometimes have issues getting nappies dry without resorting to a dryer (which we do, now and again!). It’s actually not too bad if you’re home most days as nappies dry quite well on a clothes horse in front of the heater or over a vent. If finding drying time is an issue, and your stash is primarily made up of Pockets or All-in-2s, investing in a few extra inserts or boosters can be a great way of stretching your stash. The shells of Pocket and AI2 nappies dry quickly so can be reused fairly soon after washing, if you’ve got extra inserts on hand. If you prefer Fitted or All-in-One nappies, then adding a few extra to your stash (especially those with faster drying microfibre) can be a way of giving your nappies a little more drying time.

Karen from Baby Blossom:

My favourite nappies in winter are pocket nappies or a system where you can separate the cover from your inserts. These nappies dry quicker and are ready to use again.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

Have a mixture of bamboo & polyester nappies in your stash, also nappies that come apart well as it will speed up drying time. AIOs are a great option for an easy to use nappy, but take longer to dry. Nappies hung on a clothes airer that can be moved in front of a sunny window, or any other source of heat will dry in a couple of days.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Use Pikapu nappies and nappies with microfibre inserts during winter. They dry so much faster than any other material. They man made fibres do tend to build up with washing powders, so using a hot wash with cannesten during winter will keep those stinky smells away.

Jane from Little Bear Bums:

It’s not always easy to get nappies dry in the winter but I would definitely recommend using the sun as much as you can before using the dryer. There’s no shame in using the dryer sometimes, but the sun is the best thing you can use for stains and smells.
I usually put my nappies outside at least for a little while, or in an under covered area, and then finish them off in the dryer on a low setting.

Our Comment Question is about Using Washable Nappies in Winter:

How do you dry your washable nappies in winter while keeping them in good condition?

Warranties and Guarantees on My New Modern Cloth Nappies – What Do I Need To Know?

WIN a modern cloth nappy - Join our Giveaways List

MCN Warranties and Guarantees: What You Must Know to Be a Savvy Shopper.

All Products Carry some sort of Warranty or Guarantee to Protect the Consumer as Well as the Manufacturer. Find Out What You Should Know Before Choosing Your Modern Cloth Nappies…

Warranties and Guarantees on My New MCN – What Do I Need To Know?

Kelly from Nappy Needz:

It’s worth looking for guarantees offered by companies for new MCN.  Most nappies should last you for at least one baby.  The fewer features that they have, snaps, elastic etc, the more likely they are to last.  I have some nappies in my stash that have been used on at least five little bottoms so far.Kelly – Nappy Needz –

Karen from Baby Blossom:

Most of more well known brands come with a standard 3-6 months warranty. If you are not sure, check before you buy. Most warranties won’t cover incorrect washing or use, so read your use instructions before.

Liz from Hatchlings Cloth Nappies:

The most important thing here is that the company has a Warranty and Guarantee. The main things that put your nappies out of action are damaged closures, elastic failure, and damage to the waterproofing (delamination of the PUL etc). If your nappy suffers a catastrophic failure like those listed above you want to know your covered or you could end up very disappointed. But make sure you follow the care instructions because otherwise most Warranties or Guarantees will be void.

Kendall from Australian Baby Supplies:

Make sure you read any instructions that come with your nappies as different brands have different conditions for warranty. Generally washing with napisan or bleach, putting the outer shells into the dryer or washing in water over 60C will void your warranty.

Melanie & Diana of Bodeo:

Give your new nappies a quick once over BEFORE you wash them! Check for broken snaps, poor stitching, and that they are as you expected. If you receive a new nappy that you believe is faulty, contact the point of sale to ask what they can do, as they will generally chase up manufacturers on your behalf.

Misty from FluffyBuns:

Most brands will offer a workmanship guarantee on their nappies, ask before you purchase if they come with one and how long it is for.

Jane from Little Bear Bums:

Always check with the manufactures Warranties and Guarantees and hold onto your proof of purchase, just in case. Most nappy makers will replace or mend anything that is faulty.

All About Cloth Baby Wipes…

What About Cloth Wipes? Baby Wipes Add Up, Why Not Use Cloth Ones To Save Some Cash?

Common Questions About Cloth Wipes: How Many, What Size, How To Store And What Solution To Use?

Our Nappy Experts are invited to contribute to these cooperative questions so that you get a range of informative and experienced responses about the topic. Enjoy and discover something new, and share with us in the comment box below.

Let’s see their responses to our topic: What about Cloth Wipes? How many, what size, how to store and what solution to use?

Emma from Wrap ‘Em (closed) recommends:

Lots! If you are using something like a thin facewasher then probably at least 3 dozen. If using something more luxurious and thick you would get away with less. We don’t use any solution at all, just a spray bottle with plain water in it.

Kendall from Australian Baby Supplies recommends:

20 wipes that are at least 18cm square should do. I store mine dry and just spray a solution on when needed. I’m currently using a Foamy Wipes Wash that I bought but there are a number of recipes online if you want to try and make your own.

Melissa from Little Para Pants recommends:

We started out just using face washers and warm water. After a friend asked me to make her some wipes, I started using them as well. I’ll be using bamboo/flannelette wipes for the next baby. I stock both hemp/flannelette and bamboo/flannelette wipes.

Charndra from Part Time Nappy Free recommends:

I use flannels, keep them in a basket and use warm water straight from the tap for bum washing.

Nyree from Kodomo recommends:

We’ve got about 20 small square bamboo wipes and a cheap twist top drink bottle from the supermarket full of water in the change table. 20 is far too many for a toddler but about right for a newborn.
