The Versatile Pocket Nappy… Why Do Mums Choose Pocket Nappies?

Pocket Nappies have an opening in which the absorbent part of the nappy is placed, usually referred to as ‘stuffed’. Some have a slide through pocket so the insert can wriggle itself out in the wash, others have an elastic opening. Let’s find out more about this more versatile style of modern cloth nappies – the pocket nappy.

Our Nappy Experts are invited to contribute to these cooperative questions so that you get a range of informative and experienced responses about the topic. Enjoy and discover something new, and share with us in the comment box below.

Let’s see what they have to say:

The versatile pocket nappy… Why do mums choose Pocket Nappies?

Marnie from Noonee Wilga:

Pocket nappies are great for easy washing and quick drying.

Rebecca from Bean Sprout Bubba:

– Once stuffed, pocket nappies are as easy to put on as a disposable.

– The shells and inserts are washed more thoroughly and dry faster as you pull them apart to launder.

– If baby does a poo, it is easy to wash it off as the inner liner is one continuous layer (unlike AI2s with lay in parts or booster flaps where poo can be caught in folds)

– You can own more inserts than shells. As shells dry faster, you can put a nappy back on baby with a fresh insert faster.

– The shell can be used as a nappy cover or a swimming nappy in a pinch

Michelle from Cloth ‘n’ Craft:

Pockets are adjustable in absorbency and often size, plus you can get by with only having to buy a few! I think it’s because they’re so versatile and adjustable in every way – Plus they dry fast so you can have multiple inserts but get by on very few nappy shells which, after all, is the expensive bit!

Nyssa from Snow Pea Nappies:

For a few reasons, in my case it’s because I have a hard time drying nappies in winter and pockets are the easiest to dry since the absorbent parts can be removed and dried separately.

Another benefit is that you can add as much or as little absorbency as you need for your baby and you can choose what type of absorbent fabric to use.

Pocket nappies can also be used in the same way as a shell and booster type nappy, where you lay the booster on top of the shell rather than inside the pocket, meaning that the shell can be reused for the next change and only the booster has to be replaced.

Lastly, the shells of pocket nappies are really handy as swim nappies, they don’t hold water once the insert is removed and the elastic legs and waist mean they contain any wee and poo!

Tamara from Baby Mumma:

Pocket nappies are great nappies which give you the convenience of adding extra absorbency if needed. The boosters are kept inside the nappy which has it’s advantages and disadvantages. Advantage, it keeps everything packed nicely and they are kept relatively clean. Disadvantage – you need to stuff them.

Misty from Fluffybuns:

Pocket nappies have super absorption, are easy to use, and are always beautiful.
Laura from the Cloth Nappy Co:
Pocket nappies are easy to use and quick to put on your bub! No stuffing, no covers – just simple!

  1. I experiment with different nappy styles and appreciate the versatility and easy-care of pocket reusable nappies. This is the nappy style I sell through

    Benefits of pocket nappies include;

    -outer Pul fabric is waterproof
-inner microfleece layer resists liquid and allows wetness to pass into absorbent inserts inside
-double-stitching along the pocket and leg gathers (of brands like Oz Nappies) is dependable to stop explosive poops or other leaks
-you have the option to use an absorbent insert or layer multiple inserts made of materials like microfiber and bamboo or whatever combo works best for your baby.
-inserts are easy to load and remove for washing and drying
-you can buy pocket nappies made of different materials from different companies and interchange inserts/ night boosters.
-pocket nappies comes in a range of vibrant colours, patterned materials and soft fabrics like minkees so you have loads to choose from.
-You can go with the one-size design or buy multiple sizes to suit different stages of baby’s development.
-You have options among different closures like snaps, hooks and loops or velcro or a combination (since my son easily unfastens velcro, I opt for pocket nappies with snaps:)
